Kent PHK, New Headquarters and Workshop MansfieldWilliams-Architects were commissioned in 2008 to design a new headquarters and workshop facility to accommodate Kent PHK's growing business. Williams-Architects worked with the client to explore the feasiblity of several sites around Mansfield before deciding on the Lower Oakham Way site. Before settling on the final design options, we carried out a number of studies to explore the most efficient use of the site, resulting in a scheme that clearly separates the industrial and office elements. Whilst these two elements have been clearly expressed as individual components, they share a common composition. The two-storey office building is planned around a central circulation core. A series of voids connect the two floors vertically and provides daylight and ventilation into the depth of the plan. The facade is conceived as a series of standardised full-height window modules set into a western red cedar rainscreen. The window modules combine manually operated opening vents and solar shading.
